Rural Directions Hawke’s Bay Shepherd of the Year Award 2025

Now in its seventh year of sponsorship, the Rural Directions Shepherd of the Year Award continues to recognise the vital role shepherds play within New Zealand’s primary sector. Shepherds are a key link in the supply chain, with their daily work directly influencing animal welfare, farm performance, and the quality of product leaving the farm gate.

The role of the modern shepherd has evolved well beyond traditional stock work. Today’s shepherd is expected to combine strong practical skills with an understanding of soil health, pasture quality, feed allocation, record keeping, compliance requirements, and broader farm systems thinking. It is a role that now demands both instinct and information to achieve consistent results.

This year’s judging was extremely competitive, with all entrants demonstrating a high level of skill, professionalism, and enthusiasm for the industry. Judges noted that the overall standard was exceptionally strong, reflecting the depth of talent developing within the sector.

Rural Directions is proud to announce Joel Steele as the 2025 Rural Directions Recruitment & HR Shepherd of the Year.

Originally from Hāwera and now based at Matapiro Station, Joel impressed the judges with his calm, consistent approach, strong stockmanship, and natural leadership in the field. Trusted with responsibility for his own block and a team of four working dogs, he consistently demonstrates high standards across animal health, farm safety, and day-to-day farm operations.

Joel’s ability to remain steady under pressure, combined with his practical capability and attention to detail, set him apart in a highly competitive field.

Beyond his on-farm role, Joel has already achieved significant success within the wider industry. He has represented New Zealand twice at the World Hereford Youth Competition and was previously named Junior Herdsperson of the Year, reflecting his passion for agriculture and commitment to ongoing development.

Rural Directions congratulates Joel on this well-deserved recognition and looks forward to following his continued growth and success within the agricultural industry.
